Common Roofing Scams and How to Avoid Them

As a homeowner in Wilmington, IL, safeguarding your home involves being vigilant against potential roofing scams that could jeopardize your investment. Here, we delve into five prevalent roofing scams and provide practical tips on how to steer clear of them, ensuring you select a reputable contractor for your roofing needs.
  1. Storm Chasers
Scam: Following severe weather events, unethical contractors, known as “storm chasers,” may descend upon neighborhoods offering quick repairs or claiming to have excess materials. Avoid: Research local roofing companies with established reputations. Seek recommendations from neighbors or friends, and verify credentials such as licenses and insurance. Avoid contractors who employ high-pressure sales tactics or unsolicited door-to-door offers.
  1. Low-Ball Bids
Scam: Some contractors may lure homeowners with remarkably low bids, only to inflate costs later with hidden fees, subpar materials, or additional charges for supposed “necessary” repairs. Avoid: Obtain multiple quotes from different contractors and compare them carefully. Be wary of bids significantly lower than others, as they may indicate shortcuts in quality or unexpected expenses down the line. Choose a contractor based on reputation, expertise, and transparency rather than solely on price.
  1. Upfront Payment Demands
Scam: Dishonest contractors may demand full payment upfront before commencing work, leaving homeowners vulnerable to incomplete projects or poor workmanship. Avoid: Insist on a payment schedule tied to project milestones. A reputable contractor will agree to a down payment to cover initial costs, with subsequent payments upon completion of specific stages of the project. Never pay in full before work begins, and be cautious of contractors who insist on immediate payment.
  1. Fake Damage Claims
Scam: Some contractors may exaggerate or fabricate roof damage to justify unnecessary repairs and inflate insurance claims. Avoid: After severe weather, conduct your own inspection or hire an independent inspector to assess the damage. Consult with trusted roofing professionals or your insurance company to verify the extent of repairs needed. Be wary of contractors who push for repairs that seem excessive or unnecessary.
  1. Unlicensed or Uninsured Contractors
Scam: Hiring contractors without proper licensing or insurance can expose homeowners to liability risks if accidents occur during the project. Avoid: Verify that any contractor you consider hiring holds the necessary licenses and insurance coverage required by Wilmington, IL, regulations. Reputable contractors like Capa Construction in Wilmington, IL, will willingly provide proof of insurance and licensing upon request.
  1. Lack of Written Contracts
Scam: Contractors who avoid providing written contracts or agreements may intend to circumvent legal responsibilities or mislead homeowners about project details. Avoid: Always insist on a detailed, written contract that outlines the scope of work, materials to be used, project timeline, and payment terms. Review the contract thoroughly before signing and ensure all verbal agreements are documented in writing. Conclusion By arming yourself with knowledge about common roofing scams and exercising caution when hiring contractors, you can protect yourself from potential fraud and ensure your roofing project is handled professionally and ethically. When you’re ready to address your roofing needs in Wilmington, IL, consider contacting Capa Construction at (815) 384-6297 for reliable service backed by years of experience and a commitment to customer satisfaction. Choose wisely, and safeguard your home with confidence against roofing scams and unethical practices.

We had Capa install 4 new windows on our 1st floor. This is a much bigger job than replacing windows… they had to cut the opening, install headers then patch the drywall. Their team was meticulous and were able to do all of this in 1 day. … More It turned out awesome. After the install while they were cleaning the windows they pointed out that one of the windows had an imperfection between the panes of glass. They ordered a new window and installed it shortly thereafter. Two things that pleased us about Capa… the skill of their window install team and their customer service.

Capa Construction finished up today with a whole house window replacement. Prior to choosing Capa to complete the work we also gotten a few other quotes. One experience was more like buying a used car with numbers scribbled on some paper … More after 3 hours of wasted time. I won’t say it was Window Works. Another quote was in the ballpark of Capa but a major difference Capa was for entire removal and replacement as the other company was for replacement windows. When Tom came out to measure for quote he was very informative about the entire process and explained the difference between replacement windows and complete removal and replacing with a total window unit. When he left even without knowing what his quote would be I felt comfortable and more educated on what getting new windows would be. Paying for all new windows is quite the home improvement investment and when I received his quote it was comparable to the other company that we were considering. But the huge difference was Capa was going to rip out the old window down to the framing and start new. So it was an easy decision to go with Capa. When it was time to start the project the crews were quick to get to work. Even with the days being hot in the 90s the guys worked thru it. They were friendly and respectful to us and with our home. They kept the area clean along the way. One day no one was home and we felt confident to have the workers there. One concern I had was what the trim would be like after being taken down and reinstalled. But once done it was replaced you couldn’t even tell it had been taken down at all. The final product is a new look we are very happy with. Tom and the crews at Capa Construction would be a quality choice for windows and I gladly recommend them.

Capa Construction was recommended to me by relatives and I see why.
They did a great job replacing 16 windows. Gave me options and input as to which types of windows and coating to use. Installers were prompt, professional, courteous
… More and cleaned up when done. I did three bids and while one was a bit lower, it was clear that Tom Saner from Capa was far more professional and instilled a lot more confidence making the few extra dollars well worth it.
I would also point out that three people looked at some of the windows with shutters and said they wouldn’t touch those. Capa’ s people were meticulous in taking measurements and confirming they could and would do those windows. They did great….

Tom and his team did outstanding work to turn a dull, ordinary exterior into a more vibrant, up to date style for our home. The before and after images speak for themselves. I would use Capa again for our home projects, and expect to … More be doing so again this summer.

Great working with Tom and the entire Capa team. Tom was pleasant, professional, patient, and offered helpful advice when deciding on final colors and aspects of the overall design. His construction team was professional and considerate … More of our property, always taking the time to thoroughly cleanup after each phase of the construction. Even his garage door and gutter subcontractors were wonderful to work with and did a fantastic job taking extra care to do the work right. Already considering what else Capa Construction can do for us.

Capa Construction was a fantastic choice for installing my patio. Tom was responsive, informative, and knowledgeable from start to finish. He was kind and friendly, showing sincere commitment and value to providing high quality work. Jason … More also provided this same attitude and presentation in laying out the plan on my lot, describing the process, and taking extra time and consideration to make sure their work would reflect what I envisioned for the backyard area. The rest of the team worked quickly and did a great job with everything. I feel very lucky to have located Capa Construction in my google search and would highly recommend them to anyone looking to do this kind of work for their home!

Capa Construction is the one and only company to call. Had a beautiful new patio door installed today and I could not be happier. Tom is one square-dealing fella- the communication is spot on and you can't find better installers … More than the two gentlemen who completed the job.
